Heroic American pit bull terriers & pit bull-types
Stubby 1917-1926 was a stray found by Private John Robert Conroy on the campus of Yale University, in 1917, while Conroy was training for deployment to the European front of WWI. During the course of his stay at the camp with Pvt. Conroy, Stubby became familiar with all of the bugle calls, the drill marching routines, and even learned to give a dog's version of a salute. He would put his right paw on his right eyebrow when a salute was executed by others around him. The camp commander was so taken by Stubby's ability to salute the dog was granted permission to remain with Private Conroy. Stubby, along with Pvt. Conroy eventually traveled to the frontlines with the 102nd Infantry Division. While serving overseas, Stubby was wounded in action twice, he saved his entire platoon by warning them of a poison gas attack and he single handedly captured a German spy. The commander of the 102nd used this last act of bravery to put Stubby in for a promotion to the ranks of the Noncommissioned Officers by awarding him the rank of Sergeant. He became the first “Pit Bull” to be given rank in the United States Armed Forces.
Sgt. Stubby served in 17 battles during his stay in Europe. This Pit Bull of unknown descent became America’s first decorated war dog. Stubby lived in a time when American Pit Bull Terriers were loved and respected by everyone. They were the nation’s most popular dog, an icon, a symbol of American pride. There was no breed specific legislation, and there were no vicious “Pit Bull” attacks in the news. Dogs like Stubby were admired as heroes in households all across America. “Pit Bulls” were held in high regard as symbols of freedom and courage; they were a big part of every day life and everybody wanted one in their home. Stubby received a hero's welcome and was even honored at the White House. Stubby inspired the U.S. Military K-9 Corps. He also went on to become Georgetown University's mascot.
although "Stubby" is widely regarded as the Grandfather of the American War Dog he was not the first by any means. Dogs were commonplace during the Civil War as companions for the soldiers and during the Spanish-American war, "Jack Brutus" became the official mascot of Company K, First Connecticut Volunteer Infantry.
"Old Jack", as he was known, was considerably bigger than STUBBY and fortunately the Connecticut soldiers never got the chance to try to smuggle him anywhere since they basically spent the War encamped at various places here in the states providing coastal defense from Maine to Virginia. "Old Jack" died of spinal troubles and constipation in 1898.
Dogs were formally used during World War II, Korea and Vietnam in such roles as guards, and patrolling scouts but whether the dog is employed in a formal program or not you can be sure that wherever there are soldiers in need of comfort and companionship there will always be a faithful dog nearby.

Lady Amanda a Bull Terrier from Fielding, was inducted into the Purina Animal Hall of Fame in 1987. Lady Amanda was staying with Gabriella Baird while her owner, John Bodi, was away. Early one morning Baird woke up to find an intruder standing beside her bed. Without hesitation, Lady Amanda pinned the intruder against the wall keeping Ms. Baird safe until police arrived to take him away.
Dixie Butler another heroic APBT. On November 11, 1999 Dixie risked her life to save her family from a deadly Cottonmouth snake. The snake approached Dixie’s owner Valerie Humphries and her children outside their Georgia home. Valerie was unable to prevent the snake from getting dangerously close to her children when suddenly Dixie jumped between the snake and the children using her 50lb body as a protective shield, as a result she suffering multiple bites to her face and eyes. After fully recovering from her heroic rescue of Frank Humphries, 9 and his 7-year-old twin siblings, Katie and Codi, she received the Hero Animal of the Year Award and was inducted into the Georgia Animal Hall of Fame in 1999.
Bud 1903 made history as the first dog to travel across the U.S. in an automobile. His goggles are at the Smithsonian museum. Bud was an APBT.
Pig 1914-1923 was a WWI Pit Bull from Austin Texas. Pig became the varsity mascot at the University of Austin Texas and attended home and away athletic events. Pig also went to classes with students and participated in morning “fall-outs” with military aeronautics cadets.
Marley, a 3 year old APBT dragged Autumn Ingram, a young girl from her house. The girl had gone into the house when she saw the fire and thanks to her brave family “Pit Bull” she survived. Autumn's siblings escaped the blaze with their mother who saw the dog grab Autumn's coat and forcibly drag the girl out of the house. The house was completely destroyed in the blaze, but luckily the entire family survived.
Lilly was living with her owner Jimmy Farrel and his mother in Orleans, Ontario. Jimmy was asleep in the upstairs bedroom when his mother suddenly suffered a heart attack in the downstairs laundry room. Lilly quickly ran to Jimmy’s bedroom and began barking and banging her head against the bedroom door until Jimmy woke up and let her in. Once inside, she persisted to alert Jimmy of the emergency but Jimmy thought she was just playing. After Lilly pulled the blankets from his bed and began yanking his arm, Jimmy realized there was something terribly wrong. Lilly lead Jimmy down to the laundry room where his mother lay on the floor and Jimmy called 911. Because of Lilly’s unforgettable actions Ms. Farrel was rushed to the hospital in time to recover. Lilly was a Bull Terrier.
Chief a four yr o
ld APBT owned by Marlon Fronteras ecame a hero the day he saved his master’s wife and mother-in-law from a killer Philippine Cobra. It was February 12, 2007 in Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines (a “Pit Bull” Restricted Area) The cobra entered the family’s house then traveled into the kitchen where it encountered Maria Fronteras. She screamed when she found herself in a terrifying position of helplessness as the deadly snake moved toward her. Chief quicky responded to Maria’s scream by running in to investigate. The dog took hold of the snake in his jaws and during the struggled with the poisonous snake he was bitten on the left side of his face. Chief was unstoppable, He managed to kill the snake but unfortunately the bite to his face was fatal. It was only moments after the event took place before Chief was gone. His family will miss their cherished pet and hero.
Weela was an amazing APBT. Like so many other “Pit Bulls”, Weela was found abandoned in an alley along with her littermates at just four weeks old. The Watkins family discovered the pups and saved them from what would have been an unfortunate ending. One day while 11 year-old Gary Watkins was playing in the garden Weela charged across the yard and knocked the boy from where he was standing. Gary’s mother was completely stunned by her odd behavior, but within seconds Weela was bit by a rattlesnake on her face. Gary was safe thanks to Weela, who made a full recovery from the snake bite. Weela went on to receive the Ken-L Ration’s Dog Hero of the year in 1993 after her unbelievable rescue of 30 people, 29 dogs, 13 horses and 1 cat during heavy floods in southern California. This dog is amazing and yet Reader's Digest wrote a story on her heroic acts yet REFUSED to include that Weela is an American Pit Bull Terrier in the article. Unbelievable!
Chevy saved the day! Pit Bull owner Mandy Holmes wants everyone to know that a Pit Bull saved her life on February 15th! The Cobourg, Ontario woman said her 10-month-old puppy, a chocolate-colored American Staffordshire terrier named Chevy is her hero. Holmes, who had been sick with the flu, passed out hitting her head which sent her into convulsions. Chevy responded with quick thinking, when she ran upstairs to alert Ms. Holmes’ boyfriend, Jeremy Kelly. The dog ran back to her owner’s aid just as fast. While Kelly called 911 Chevy sat on her unconscious owner’s back and continuously licked her face until she woke up. Holmes was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where she was released a few hours later with a big bump on her forehead and a possible concussion but no serious injuries. Lucky for her Ontario allows American Staffordshire Terriers otherwise this story may have had an unhappy ending.
Missy became a hero in November 2003. Anthony Romaro a 7 yr. old Coral Springs boy was attacked by two Akitas weighing 100lb each after they escaped from their home on Anthony’s block. Ironically a dog often feared by many for its “vicious” tendencies came to the rescue. Missy a 2 yr old “Pit Bull” pulled the two Akitas off of the helpless child after several struggles during a 15-minute span. Missy’s owner Scott witnessed the attack outside his home. After many failed attempts to remove the Akitas from the boy he decided to let his “Pit Bull” out. This was a decision that may have saved Anthony’s life. Unfortunately the large, powerful dogs ripped much of Anthony's left ear off and bit into his skull before Missy was able to fight them off. Missy suffered minor scrapes and cuts on her shoulders and buttocks, received a few stitches, and is back home with her proud owner Scott. Anthony recovered after surgery at Coral Springs Medical Center. Stephanie McGuire, Anthony’s mother is very grateful that her son survived thanks to a dog that many might consider a threat.
Norton passed the ultimate temperament test when he rescued his owner by getting help after she suffered a severe, deadly allergic reaction. Norton was a 5 year old American Staffordshire Terrier owned by Ann Mathews. Ann’s throat began to close after being bit by a spider early morning on September 23, 1997. She could not speak or yell for help as the poison caused her throat to constrict immediately. She was choking to death on the floor while her husband Barrie slept in the same house. Norton sensed the emergency even from behind the closed door of the bedroom; he woke up Barrie who quickly called paramedics. After 2 days in intensive care, Ann recovered and believes she owes her life to Norton. In 1999 Norton was inducted into the Purina Animal Heroes Hall of Fame. Though Ann’s home town (Ontario, Canada) restricts “Pit Bulls”, they allow pedigreed American Staffordshire Terriers. I bet Ann is happy about that.
Shasta(Shown To The Right) is a Certified Service Dog (specializing in physical aid/alert & response/PSD/mobility) living in London, Ontario, Canada. This is her story: During 1994 A horrible accident breaks a young mother’s neck. Chronic pain from her injury leaves her disabled, unemployed and unable to carry out her regular household duties as a mother and wife. Even surgery would not relieve the pain caused by permanent nerve damage to her spine. Years of chronic pain turns Conners into a total recluse leading to severe social anxiety and a manic depression among other psychiatric phobias. Eventually her children grow up and her husband grows tired of the difficulties now surrounding their once happy relationship. Faced with a harsh reality she moves out on her own with only her loving dog Shasta by her side.
Unsure of what lies ahead, Conners reluctantly attempts to re-claim her independence. Little by little, day, by day, Shasta helps her fragile owner overcome many of her debilitating phobias. Just a few steps outside the house each day is like an amazing journey. Quick interactions with strangers on the street slowly help to build up Conners confidence and melt away her severely overwhelming social anxiety. As Shasta begins to repair Conners fragile emotional state, talks of BSL stir in Ontario. Would she lose her dog, her life-saving companion to an unjust legislation? Shasta’s future suddenly became unknown because she is an American Pit Bull Terrier. In most cases dogs like her are euthanized when BSL is enacted, not because they are dangerous dogs, but because they fit the description of a “dangerous breed” by legislator standards.

Fortunately, due to Shasta’s amazing ability to rehabilitate her sick owner and assist with difficult daily tasks, she was tested and certified as a “restricted breed” service dog in 2006. Her certification protects Shasta from the death sentence often carried out by cruel regulations of BSL. It also ensures Shasta’s freedom to live with her companion Conners until the end. Ontario enacted BSL as of October, 28, 2005 therefore Shasta must wear a muzzle in public (as seen in the photo), which prevents her from doing some of her duties as a certified PSD (Psychiatric Service Dog). One of the important duties of a PSD is to alert and respond to high anxiety levels in order to reduce severe symptoms from panic attacks, like fainting which can lead to bodily injury. Though Shasta must be muzzled in public, she is still a wonderfully, skilled service dog. This touching story is proof that knowledge really is power and if you legally fight for what you believe then anything is possible. (Visit Connors website: Defend-a-Bull.com)

“Buddy 2000” woke up his owner Barbara Tollison in the middle of the night in July of 2000 after smelling smoke in the house. Tollison quickly jumped out of bed and yelled out to her sister Jane who was asleep in the guest bedroom. Buddy and Tollison made it out but Jane did not follow as planned. Tollison ran back into the burning house as Buddy followed. Jane yelled for help but she could not find her way through the thick, black smoke. Buddy ran to the bedroom and lead Jane out of the smoky room toward the front door. Everyone made it out safely thanks to Buddy, a courageous stray Pit Bull Terrier mix who unexpectedly showed up on Barbara Tollison’s doorstep one day. Buddy was renamed “Buddy 2000” for his extraordinary courage that night.

Blueberry is another courageous APBT. This heroic dog protected her owner from two armed attackers after they broke into the home. The fearless canine pounced on the intruders as they opened fire, Blueberry’s legs and jaw were broken as a result but she did not give up until the intruders fled her home. Blueberry risked her own life as well as the lives of her unborn puppies to protect her beloved owner. Fortunately, veterinarians at Perdue University were able to patch up Blueberry’s injuries and thankfully she will be just fine, they also believe her unborn puppies are going to be born healthy as well.
Th is one of the organizations that volunteered therapy dogs, including some “Pit Bull-type breeds” and an APBT to help the victims and families who lost loved ones after the attack on the World Trade Center in NYC on September 11, 2001. Many people suffered from severe depression and shock as well as post traumatic stress as a result of this terrorist attack on our nation. Sometimes the unconditional love of a dog can break through when medicine can’t. Therapy dogs are used in many different aspects of emotional rehabilitation.

Taylor

the U.S state customs dog (now retired) worked at the port of San Ysidro California. This Staffordshire Bull Terrier, like so many others has worked end
lessly to protect Americans from crime and danger. Thanks to a few poorly-bred and mistreated “Pit Bulls” great ones like Taylor are overlooked and tossed out like garbage. Luckily there are still people who know the truth about “Pit Bulls” and stride to repair their tarnished image by preserving the heroic, tenacious, athletic, dependable “Pit Bull” that was once loved and desired by every American.

Bandog Dread (Shown Right) is owned by Dian Jessup, author of The Working Pit Bull. Bandog Dread holds more canine working titles than any other breed.
Neville (Sh

Neville (Shown left) a tan, two-year old American Pit Bull Terrier escaped from his owners in summer of 2005 only to be scooped
up by a canine patrol and taken to the nearby Georgina animal shelter. Faced with looming anti-“Pit Bull” legislation across the province of Ontario his outlook was grim, especially after his owners phoned to say they wouldn't post Neville's bail. "But he was a great dog with a great disposition and extremely playful," recalls shelter supervisor Angie Closs. He stayed at the shelter for a month, as staff scrambled to find him a way out of a death sentence. What followed was a 4,248- km chain of human kindness that shuttled Neville by hand, by car and by plane. The convict canine was finally through the U.S./Canada border and in a country where his life was no longer in direct danger.
The shelter contacted Toronto-based Bullies in Need, a “Pit Bull” rescue squad which has organized at least a dozen flights of freedom for the much damned dogs since the province passed BSL. All have come from shelters and faced being euthanized only due to their breed not because of behavior issues. Sharon Hewitt, a co-director of the organization, says Neville's great escape has become pet-legend, he is proof that a province's outcast can become a nation's hero. "And there are more like him out there," she says. Bullies in Need organized a volunteer to drive Neville across the border into Buffalo. There, another local shelter put him up until more volunteers arranged for a flight west.

Strangers bent rules on how long they could keep a stray. They neutered him at their own cost and paid for his flight. He stayed with a foster family before the mild-mannered mutt was passed over to Diane Jessup, a former animal control officer who runs Law Dogs USA a Washington State outfit which finds police work for outcast dogs. With her help, Neville was deputized by the Washington State Patrol. He now screens more than 300 cars a day on the Washington State Ferry system, looking for explosives. He even made cover-boy for a national canine magazine. Neville is the perfect cop, and after thousands of dollars worth of training he now wears a silver badge over his heart. He has as many web fan sites as some TV celebrities. On her own web site, Jessup has a special thanks for Ontario, "for kicking out such an awesome dog." She writes: "Neville is now protecting homeland security for America. I'd say the joke is on Ontario." Neville the “Pit Bull” is the perfect example of how wrong BSL really is. Haven’t they ever learned not to judge a book by its cover?
Law Dogs USA only uses well-bred American Pit Bull Terriers to do not only bomb detection, but also to help find and prevent illegal drugs from entering the US. APBTs have been protecting America from the very beginning. These dogs were once called the “watch dogs of America” I believe it is fair to say they still are. “The reason we use well bred American Pit Bulls is that good ones have greater concentration to the task at hand than any other breed. Once focused on their job, they will "do or die"; a remnant from their rugged past. What better dog - and attitude - to have working for Homeland Security or fighting the War on Drugs!” www.LawDogsUSA.org

Popsicle was found close to dead locked in freezer on a drug dealer’s porch in Buffalo NY in 1997. His bloody, malnourished little body was discovered in a garbage bag by a police officer Ron Clark Jr. and due to the horrific conditions it was concluded that this dog may have been used in illegal dog-fighting. Considering what this puppy had survived, the shelter contacted US Customs canine-enforcement officer Sally Barr in the hopes that maybe Popsicle would qualify for the dog training school in Front Royal, VA. Of 500 dogs Barr had tested in the previous three years, only four made the cut. In February 1998 Popsicle graduated at the top of his class. Two months later Popsicle became a drug-sniffing, crime fighting American hero by detecting the record contraband cache under a tractor-trailer. His amazing drug-sniffing ability landed the U.S. with the largest drug bust ever achieved at the Mexican border: 3,075 pounds of cocaine found in a pineapple truck in 1998. For this he was awarded the agency’s Significant Seizure Award, he appeared in magazine articles and even went on Oprah!
Popsicle and hundreds of dogs like him are responsible for discovering billions of dollars in illegal drugs each year at the Mexican border. Popsicle is another great example of an average “Pit Bull” that almost didn’t make it, but when given the chance by someone who saw his great potential he went on to make history by becoming an American legend.

RCA was left at an animal shelter in Anchorage after her owners were unable to find rental housing that would allow “Pit Bulls”. Unfortunately this is an all too common situation that so many “Pit Bulls & Pit Bull Types” must face. Lucky for her she was chosen among 170 other dogs to be temperament tested for a start-up hearing dog program. RCA had the highest score in the group and went on to become Alaska’s first certified hearing dog! That just goes to show you, an average shelter dog can be a dependable companion, an amazing pet, or even a historic icon.

Cheyenne & Dakota are respected search & rescue dogs as well as therapy dogs. Owner Kristine Crawford is very proud of her two “Pit Bulls”. These dogs are helping very ill people overcome sadness and even severe depression. Therapy dogs play an extremely important role in the recovery process for people in need. The unconditional love of Cheyenne & Dakota is evident in their affection for everyone they meet. These amazing companions and so many like them have the power to heal just by existing. In seconds they have the ability to bring a smile to a sad face, or hope to a hopeless heart.

Crawford adopted Cheyenne from a local shelter in California after she was diagnosed with an illness that changed her life. Crawford saw Cheyenne and immediately knew she was the one. Cheyenne was to be euthanized at 4-months old for no other reason than her breed (American Staffordshire Terrier). In California hundreds of lovable, caring, companion -“Pit Bulls” are euthanized every day. Approximately 800 a week are put to death in LA alone due to overpopulation in shelters! The day they met, it was clear that Cheyenne and Crawford truly saved each other from a very grim future. Soon after adopting Cheyenne, Crawford adopted Dakota, a beautiful American Pit Bull Terrier. Cheyenne & Dakota have overcome breed prejudice to become powerful healing therapy dogs, friends, and life savers to so many. It is “Pit Bull-Type” breeds like these that remind America of the wonderful potential these breeds have to offer if given the chance.
Hershey, is an American Pit Bull Terrier that was abused by a breeder and ended up at the Toronto Humane Society. Now Hershey is a St. John’s Ambulance therapy dog. Hershey received an award from the Toronto Humane Society at a ceremony launching “Be Kind to Animal Week” on May, 2nd 2005 in Toronto, Canada, now a “Pit Bull” banned province. The Kyser family adopted Hershey from the Toronto Humane Society and never expected they would eventually bring him back one day to receive a medal of honor.

Spike 1988 – 2000 Spike will be remembered by many for being one of the greatest modern ambassadors this breed has known. As a service dog, Spike has made his mark on the community and he will not be forgotten by those who knew him.
